  1. The Nightingale: Gender Roles and Relationships During the Annees Noires

    February 9, 1:00 PM - 2:00 PM @ Chelmsford Public Library

This special Friday Lecture will consider the role of gender in determining French experiences and memories of World War II, as a way of providing context for Kristin Hannah’s The Nightingale. It will, more specifically, address French women’s adaptations to conditions of foreign occupation, their involvement in Resistance activities, and their often-conflicted experiences of “Liberation” at the war’s end. The talk will include photographs, film clips and novel/memoir excerpts representing women’s complex experiences of, and reflections upon, their wartime lives. Patrick Young is an Associate Professor of History at the University of Massachusetts-Lowell, with specialization in Modern French and European History.
