The Great Halifax Explosion and the Boston Christmas Tree

Thursday, December 6

On December 6, 1917, 6,000,000 pounds of munitions and aviation fuel detonated in Halifax Harbor, destroying much of the city and killing more than 2000 people. On the very same day, trains left from Boston carrying doctors, nurses, relief workers, and supplies and help continued for months to come. Dr. Lee Poirier will discuss the causes that led up to one of the worst civilian disasters of World War I and the humanitarian spirit that followed. Dr. Poirier taught electrical engineering and physics at UMASS Lowell and Tufts University before his retirement.
